From fewer to many more!! Our numbers swelled with the return Paul Daly from the USA, Dr Bob from Canada and Glenn Trim from a tour of Eastern Canada and North Eastern USA. Along with them was our guest speaker, journalist, art critic and author, Ron Banks, there to take us back to a time when the print media reigned supreme and the flagship banners were in great demand from entrepreneurs, like Alan Bond and Robert Holmes a' Court. See our report below.
Anna's move to her new host parents, Jody and Darryl Tovey, has gone smoothly and she's enjoying the company of her "brothers' aged eleven (11), fifteen (15) and seventeen (17). She is also taking surfing lessons and by her own assessment is doing "not to bad".
As a result of the untiring efforts of Sue Thorp and her colleagues at Willetton Senior High School (WSHS), eleven (11) members of the WSHS Interact Club will receive a certificate for participating in "a learning programme from a private provider" (in this case community service through Rotary International), which is recognised by the WA Schools Curriculum and Standards Authority. The Interactors will receive a credit equivalent to a "C"grade pass in a six month course for each 55 hours of community service they have done. Of the eleven (11) recipients, five (5) have done 110 hours or more for which they will get two (2) or more credits. These credits can be used if needed to bolster their qualification for university entrance and in any case, a commitment to community service is highly valued by all WA Universities and in particular, Notre Dame.
See also "All Things Youth" below for more on the Interact Awards and the many other Youth activities in which the Club is involved including the National Youth Science Forum (NYSF); the WSHS Student and Teacher Awards Night, Rotary WA Driver Education (RWADE), support for students involved in the Duke of Edinburgh Awards.
There was more good news when the Club Chair for Foundation, Stuart Diggins, announced that the Club’s application for ‘D9465 Assisted Funding for Club Sponsored Global Grants’ was successful. The application sought an amount of $US10,000 toward a total project budget amounting to $US120,483 to set up a dairy farm through which Sri Lankan war widows in the Tamil community of Jaffna can earn a living. The project is being championed by Club member, Past District Governor (PDG) Pushpa Pushpalingam. We will be the International Host club and partner with the Rotary Club of Nallur, Jaffna. The next step is to initiate the Global Grant application and to also to source funds from other Clubs and the Tamil fraternity in Australia and overseas.
Shelterbox has written to thank the Club for our contribution in support of a deployment of boxes to Sulawesi, Indonesia to provide temporary accommodation for the community reeling from the effects of the recent earthquake and tsunami. It's another example of how we Rotarians help those less fortunate.
