President's Message

It's been quite some time since we "chronicled" our activities while our Editor took a break to overcome a bit of Rotary burn out. I know he appreciated that everyone continued to provide him with material and he asked me to pass on his apologies for not acting upon it. He is now getting back into the swing of things to keep you all informed. When space permits, he'll do a retrospective of key events from May onwards. The first will be a summary of what was a very busy and productive 2017/18 Rotary year. We achieved a great deal and I thank everyone most sincerely for their support and commitment.

It seems as though no sooner had Cole left our shores than our new inbound exchange student Anna Longlune arrived from Belgium. We were delighted to have her at our Club meeting and were very impressed with her commitment to fight through her jet lag and attend the day after her arrival, accompanied by her host parents Colleen & John Flynn  and her "host sister" Meg. Since the meeting she has enrolled at school and as you'll see in the image below, has been kitted out with her school uniform.

My thanks to Steve Genoni for stepping in at short notice with an extended Thumb Nail sketch (which he really "nailed"! ED). The range of his appointments and the depth of his experience during his working life was impressive, but as you'd expect of a boy from the goldfields, Steve was rather modest about it all. We report on Steve's presentation below.

My thanks also to Greg Hamilton for his International toast and to Simon Cubitt for his untiring efforts to identify and secure candidates for the various District Youth Programmes. Right now that includes  the National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) and Rotary Youth Programme of Enrichment (RYPEN).

Our new Board met for the first time on Wednesday to firm up on plans for the year ahead including the Club and Goodworks budgets. We'll report on proceedings in due course.

While not exhaustive, the following list will give a pretty good idea of all:

A TOAST TO THE ROTARY CLUB OF CARNOUSTIE SCOTLAND

The town of Carnoustie in Scotland is 20km NE of Dundee, and is 100km NE of Edinburgh. It has a population of 11400 and boast a world championship golf links course. So while it was a tenuous link, Greg Hamilton proposed a toast to the Rotary Club of Carnoustie because it was the Carnoustie Golf Club which hosted the 2018 British Open Golf Championship. They did such a good job of ‘tricking up’ the course that they prevented an American from winning.  Instead, an Italian, Francesco Molinari, won making history as the first of his countrymen to win one of golf’s major championships.

The Rotary Club Carnoustie Club is in Rotary District 1010. They are led by President  Lorraine Young and meet every Wednesday at 6.15 pm in the Station Hotel. The Club is very active in the community and each year undertake the following Community projects:

  • Golf Memories Museum
  • Dementia Awareness and Assistance
  • Young Musician of the Year Award
  • School Poetry Competition
  • Soccer Coaching Clinic
  • Fund raising for the Carnoustie Charity Shop
  • Primary School Quiz Competition
DR BOB ON POLITICS

American philosopher Will Rogers said: I don't make jokes, I just observe the government and report the facts!!
He also observed that:
An honest politician is one who when they are bought-stay bought!!; and
A fool and his money are soon elected!!
