President's Message

Our meeting on Monday night was in large part a celebration of young achievers, namely Marcus Wong and Josephine Santosa. Our exchange student, Johanna and Kieran English's son, Winston, completed the mix. Winston did a great job helping his Dad with the attendance recording and Johanna demonstrated her impressive command of English when she told us about her first full week in Australia which included her first day at school and a trip to Optus stadium to witness the Eagle's demolition of North Melbourne. This may well influence her loyalties-despite the best efforts of Simon "the Docker" Cubitt.

Josephine Santosa was Head Girl at Willetton Senior High School (WSHS) in 2018, is a Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) graduate and is currently studying dentistry at UWA. She is also involved in a project to showcase "A Day In the Life of RYLA". Josephine came to tell us all about her recent experience on the Rotary Youth Leadership Extension Advanced Programme (RYLEAP) It's an intensive, primarily theoretical program for people eighteen (18) to thirty (30) years of age who are serious about learning cutting edge leadership skills. With a maximum of fifteen (15) participants, a much deeper level of information can be taught.

Marcus Wong was the  Charter President of the Willetton Senior High (WSHS) School Interact Club where he laid the foundations of the Club's success. This culminated in the Club receiving the 2019 Youth Group Achievement Award sponsored by the Seven West Media Group. Marcus graduated from Curtin University earlier this year after completing a double major in Screen Arts, Creative Advertising and Graphic Design. On 22 May 2019 he was named the WA Youth Volunteer of the Year for his outstanding commitment to and positive impact on the lives of impoverished and disadvantaged people in Uganda and Ethiopia. Read more of his inspiring story below.

Our Past District Governor (PDG), Erwin Biemel, was the night's target for PDG Pushpa Pushpalingam representing Immediate Past District Governor (IPDG) Robyn Yates, to present her Certificate of Appreciation to Erwin for his wealth of wisdom and knowledge so willingly given; and being an asset to her team. We also say well done Erwin for your unfailing commitment to all things Rotary.

On 24 July 2019 the Board approved the Good Works budget. There will be more about that at the  Club Assembly next week, but I do want mention the Sri Lankan Mini Dairy project because it was linked to the international toast by the Club's Rotary Foundation Chair, Stuart Diggins. I thank him for the toast and for his deep involvement in the application for a Rotary Foundation Global Grant to assist the development.of the dairy. The Rotary Club of Chunnakam Heritage, Sri Lanka is the Host Club for the project and we are the the International Club.

Please don't forget that the WSHS Interact Club is holding a Quiz Night from 7pm to 10pm on Friday 9 August 2019 in the WSHS Performing Arts Centre to raise funds for Mercy Ships and Water For Africa. Simon Cubitt has volunteered to put a table together to show our support, just as they do for us. See the details at right.

UPENDO-CHARITY QUIZ NIGHT
NORTH TO SRI LANKA FOR AN INTERNATIONAL TOAST

Stuart Diggins proposed the toast to the Rotary Club of Chunnakam Heritage which was chartered on 24th June 2015.  It is located in northern Sri Lanka within Rotary District 3220 and meets on the second and fourth Sundays at 5.00pm at Gaja Restaurant, Chunnakam. They currently have twelve (12) members led by President Rotarian PHF Nimalshan Swarnarajah. This year, in addition to the global grant work, the Club is focusing effort on water and sanitation projects as the Chunnakam area is badly affected by Oil. Other endeavours of the Club include:
  • Participation in World Polio Day and a conference to rid Sri Lanka of polio;
  • Participation in the T R R Rajan Inter Club cricket tournament
  • Donation of computers for use in schools.
GLENN KEEPS THEM COMING!

Sadly, my Grandfather passed away about a month ago. My Grandmother was treating him for dry skin and covered his back with coconut oil. He slid down hill very quickly after that.

A big, black dog goes to the Post Office to send an email. The clerk says "OK, it's five words per line and $5 per line". The dog says "OK cool, write this down. Woof, woof, woof woof (14 times)". The clerk says "you've got room  to round it up with one more woof if you like". "Don't be stupid" says the dog. "Then it wouldn't make any sense".

During my travels, I once stayed in a hotel where the towels were so thick I could hardly close my suitcase.

Did you hear about the crook who stole a calendar? He got twelve months.
