First and foremost on this Monday evening it was my pleasure to welcome Erwin Biemel back.

Our meeting then got off to a great start with Mihan De Silva giving us a preview of the speech he will deliver at the Four Way Test Speech Contest on Wednesday 1 November. It's hosted by the Rotary Club of Applecross and Mihan will be representing our Club. He acquitted himself admirably with a well thought out, perfectly delivered speech, watched by his proud family.

Mihan is to be congratulated for stepping up at such a critical time of the year with his Year 10 exams looming. It's not his only commitment as he's also the Secretary of the Willetton Senior High School Interact Club.  We've included some more information about the contest below.

We have now paid for our two successful candidates, Josephine Santosa and Rachael McColgan to attend  the National Youth Science Forum (NYSF); and also Bianca Stevenson to embark on the Leeuwin Ocean Adventure. Meanwhile we are still looking for a nominee for the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) to which Simon Cubitt is applying his considerable recruiting skills.

Paul Daly told us that the Rotaract Club of South Perth is presenting the inaugural Cabernet and Canvas event on Saturday 4 November. It's a great initiative and I encourage members to support it if they can. See all the details below.

Cole is back with Paul and Gill Todd, but on the weekend spent time with Paul Day at the Fremantle markets. He'll also 'free as a bird" now that exams have started at school. That's because he is not expected to sit them. So there's plenty of opportunity to catch up with him. His next big excursion is the Sydney trip with his fellow exchange students from 16-18 November.

On Thursday, 26 October under Simon Cubitt's watchful eye, David Coldwell, Ian Ross and I got started on the makeover of Danny Harrison's home.

We will hold our Annual General Meeting on Monday 13 November 2017. Amongst other things, we will elect the Club office bearers for 2018-2019. If you are able to serve, please do nominate with Secretary John. In particular, we need a President Elect. Prior to the meeting we will circulate a questionnaire for member's views on the running of the Club and on some of the practices and protocols we follow.

Before that there's the "End Polio" fund raising movie night on Wednesday 8 November featuring "Murder on the Orient Express". It's an important fund raiser so pIease attend if you can. To purchase tickets Click Here

The next Community Fair committee meeting is on Thursday 9 November. The Fair is scheduled for 8 April 2018 and will be preceded in March by a smaller Fair to be run by the Rotary Club of Rossmoyne at a different venue. We are assisting them where we can and don't believe it will impact on our Fair.

On a sad note, I have to report that Greg Delfs continues to be very unwell. While it is better at present not to visit or phone him, I know he would appreciate hearing from members via text.

THE FOUR WAY TEST SPEECH COMPETITION
The Four Way Test speech contest is a competition for secondary school students. It highlights the concepts of the Rotary Four Way Test, creates an opportunity for students to develop their public speaking skills and provides Rotary with valuable exposure within the community. The contest is open to students who are in Year 10 for the first round in September and in Year 11 by the time of the District final in March of the following year.

The Test is a nonpartisan and nonsectarian ethical guide for Rotarians to use for their personal and professional relationships. The test has been translated into more than 100 languages: It applies to the things we think, say or do as follows:
  1. Is it the TRUTH?
  2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
  3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
  4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

A TOAST-TO THE ROTARY CLUB OF BANFF
The Rotary Club of Banff, Canada is in Rotary District 5360 and was chartered 0n 3 June 1924. The current President is  John Stratton and they meet at the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel, 405 Spray Ave., Banff on Tuesday at 7:45 AM.   And a bit of history:
In March of 1929 the Banff Rotary Club climbed to Mt. Norquay for lunch, aided by horse drawn sleighs and the dog teams of Ike Mills. "A snow slide occurred at the Norquay Camp a short time after the Rotarians and guests had left. A spectacular sight as the snow came off the top and funnelled down the slide area to the north of the cabin. Some wild rumours have been circulated about the slide covering the cabin. These are groundless. The slides are annual events and have been expected by ski officials for several days." (Crag & Canyon)

THE TAX MAN (ALIAS RIC D) COMETH!

Standing in for Dr Bob, Ric Davies drew on his vast experience of revenue raising to give us the following pearls:

A fine is a tax for doing wrong. A tax is a fine for doing well.

The taxman was surprised to receive a letter which read,

"Dear Sir, Last year I cheated on my tax and I can't sleep

for thinking about it. I am therefore enclosing a cheque

for 2,000 dollars. If I find that I still can't sleep, I'll

send you the balance." -Anonymous

In order to simplify tax collections in the near future the  ATO will issue a new easier to use tax form with the following questions/instructions:

1.  How much money did you make this year?   _____________

2.  SEND IT IN.

ATO Investigator to taxpayer:  "I'm afraid we can't allow you to deduct last year's tax as a bad investment."
